1) Dementia
2) Amnesia
3) Delirium
Cognitive impairment and memory loss is seen in
Dementia and delirium
Amnesia - has memory loss, no cognitive impairment
Delirium characteristics of symptoms
Wax and wane over time
Altered mental status, acute and overt
Has insult, when insult is better will get better (i.e. UTI) and back to normal
Dementia - syx
Chronic, insidious, permanent
Presentation remains same
Progression of dementia
Normal aging –> MCI (mild cognitive) –> dementia
There are tests for different areas of cognitive function
Normal aging:
Test cognitive - negative
Function - normal
Mild cognitive impairment
Test cognitive - positive
Function - normal (lost a bit of memory, but need some spousal support)
Dementia
Test cognitive - positive
Function - negative
