Neuroimaging Flashcards
CT
2D-Static
- X-ray based
- non-invasive and fast
- low resolution
PET
Dynamic
- isotopes made by accelerating protons into nucleus,
- extra proton and id broken down into neutron and positron
- positron collides with electron leading to mutual annhilation
- results in emission of two gamma rays exactly 180 degrees apart
MRI
Static
- expose elements of odd atomic weight to magnetic field
— atoms will align with the magnetic field
- alignment perturbed by pulses of radio waves tipping nuclei out of orientation
— when pulses removed, the atoms realign, emitting radio waves
fMRI
Dynamic
- detects differences in magnetic properties of o2 blood and deo2 blood
— when hemoglobin is deo2 it implies neuronal activity
