Neuroglia Flashcards
What are glial cells?
Non-neuronal cells that support nervous system
What are 4 main types of neuroglia in CNS?
- Astrocytes
- Oligodendrocytes
- Microglia
- Ependyma
What can glial cell dysfunction lead to?
Neurological disorders (schizophrenia, autism, neurodegeneration)
What is most common neuroglia in CNS?
Astrocytes
Structure of astrocytes?
Star-shaped branching
Structural function of astrocytes?
Support and brace neurones and anchor them to nutrient supply line
How are astrocytes involved in metabolism?
Provide neurones with nutrients (metabolic exchange between neurones and blood)
How are astrocytes involved in blood-brain barrier?
Restrict movement of substances from bloodstream
Form tight junctions between endothelial cells of capillaries
How are astrocytes involved in growth?
Promote neurone growth and synapse formation
How are astrocytes involved in K+ clearance?
Absorb K+ released from neurone at synapse
What is function of oligodendrocytes?
Myelinate axons (one does up to 50)
Where are oligodendrocytes most common?
In white matter
What is function of microglia?
Immune defence - become phagocytic
What is function of ependyma?
- Lining cells for ventricles and central spinal canal
2. Produce CSF - have cilia on luminal side
What is the blood brain barrier?
Exchange site for nutrients and waste
