Neurodegenerative Diseases Flashcards
Alzheimer’s disease causes
Damage to cholinergic cells. Reduced acetylcholine and nicotine receptors
Alzheimers genes and proteins
APP, PSEN1/2, Amyloid Beta, tau
Alzheimers treatments
Amyloid Beta found in CSF and Tau found in plasma as bio markers.
Antibodies target amyloid plaques, helps to reduce build up but does not reverse disease progression. Expensive. Need to undergo MRIs to monitor ARIA risk.
Parkinson’s causes
Loss of dopaminergic neurons in the pas compacta of substantia nigra
Parkinson’s genes and proteins
Parkin, PINK1, LRRK2, alpha-synuclein
Parkinson’s treatment
L-Dopa
Huntington’s causes
Loss of neutrons in caudate nucleus, glutamate excitotoxicity
Huntington’s symptoms
Depression, behavioural changes, cognitive impairment
Huntington’s treatment
Reducing the production of all Htt protein forms
ALS Causes
Degeneration of UMN and LMN
ALS proteins
SOD1, C9ORF72, FUS, TDP-43
ALS Treatment
Anti-glutamate medication. Not very effective
