What is the difference between Delirium and Dementia?

A

Delirium Symptom Onset:
Begins abruptly (e.g., head injury or seizure)
Slower onset (several hours or days of prodromal symptoms) if the underlying cause is a systemic illness or metabolic imbalance.
Delirium Duration:
Usually 1 week; rarely more than 1 month
Symptoms usually diminish over 3- to 7-day period when underlying causes are eliminated.

Alzheimer’s of Dementia:
Onset is slow and insidious.
Course of the disorder is generally progressive and deteriorating.
Memory impairment is an early and prominent feature.
