Neuroanatomy Language Flashcards
Dorsal
Towards the back
Ventral
Front
Rostral
Latin for “beak”
= toward the NOSE
Caudal
Latin for “tail”
=towards the TAIL or posterior
Anterior
Front
like the ante meridian is in the front of the day
Proximal
Situated nearer the CENTER of the body or point of attachment
Distal
Further away from the center of the structure of interest
Axial
Towards the central axis
Appendicular
•refers to the appendages which are
AWAY FROM central axis
Horizontal
= AXIAL = Transverse = Cross section
Parallel to the horizon or floor
Coronal
CROWN or TIARA-like
Sagittal
•a Vertical plane running from front to back
•divides body into RIGHT and LEFT sides
Central Nervous System
brain, spinal chords and tracts
Peripheral Nervous System
nerves and ganglia
Telencephalon
Greek = “end brain”
•the Anterior part of the forebrain
Consists of:
1) cerebral hemispheres
2) basal forebrain
Diencephalon
Greek = “in between brain”
•The caudal (posterior) part of the forebrain
Consists of:
-Thalamus
-Hypothalamus
-Epithalamus
Dorsal Root Ganglia (DRG)
Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nerves
Mid-sagittal Plane
View of brain that shows
bisection of brain down longitudinal fissure
Hemisections
Refers to two halves of brain as separated by longitudinal fissure
Prosencephalon
Forebrain:
1) Telencephalon
2) Diencephalon
Rhombencephalon
Hindbrain:
1) Metencephalon
2) Myelencephalon
Metencephalon
Part of the hindbrain
that contains the Pons & Cerebellum
Myelencephalon
Part of the hindbrain that
contains the MEDULLA
View of Developing Nervous
System from the side (Human)
Sub-Cortical
deep to the cortex
valuably shown in the Coronal fashion
