Neuroanatomy Flashcards
What does grey matter mainly contain?
Cell bodies in the cortex
What does white matter mainly contain?
Axons and dendrites
What is the anterior/rostral direction in the brain?
Front
What is the posterior/caudal direction in the brain?
Back
What is the dorsal/superior direction in the brain?
Top
What is the ventral/inferior direction in the brain?
Bottom
What type of MRI slicing is horizontal?
Axial slicing
What type of MRI slicing is through the middle?
Coronal section slicing
What type of MRI slicing is longitudinal through the brain?
Sagittal slicing
What separates the frontal lobe from the temporal lobe?
Lateral Sulcus (Sylvian fissure)
What separates the frontal lobe from the parietal lobe?
Central Sulcus (Rolandic Sulcus)
What is a gyrus?
The hill at the top
What is a sulcus?
The bits/lines that dip down and separate the lobes
What is the insula?
Middle of the brain, beneath the parietal lobes
What is the function of the insula?
Introspection, empathy, perception, self-awareness, motor control, cognitive functioning, and homeostasis
What does the corpus callosum do?
Connects left and right hemispheres
What brain structures are included in the hindbrain?
- Cerebellum
- Pons
- Medulla Oblongata
What is the role of the thalamus?
Responsible for all sensory pathways except for smell
What is the pituitary gland known as?
Master gland – regulates hormones in the body
What is the function of the pineal gland?
Involved in regulating circadian functions
What are the anterior and posterior commissures?
Connect left and right sides of the brain at the front and back
What is the fornix?
White matter pathway in the brain, tract of the hippocampus
What is the substantia nigra involved in?
Parkinson’s disease; creates dopamine
What is the cortex described as?
A 2-dimensional sheet
