Neuro (week 5) Flashcards
What is the first clue a kid has a brain injury
their behavior/ appearance
How is a child’s breathing affected by neurological conditions
Seizures or infarctions…can cause slow irregular breathing
Slow, shallow breathing…may be sedative or opioids
How do we open the airway when we suspect a neck injury?
Jaw thrust maneuver
When do we start bag and mask ventilation?
A patient is breathing at 12 breaths per minute and oxygen saturations are 80%
When do we start compressions in an infant?
An infant’s HR drops to 60 start CPR (normal 120)
Level of consciousness
LOC: describes the ability of a person to process information and respond to that information verbally or physically.
Increased cranial pressure
ICP: Force exerted by the brain tissue, CSF, and blood…always has to be a balance…so simply if one increases, another has to decrease.
For example, if you have bleeding in the brain, that blood takes up space and since there is no where for the blood to escape due to your skull, another area has to decrease so brain tissue might diminish but that could cut off oxygen, leading to death of tissue in the brain
what is cerebral perfusion pressure
CCP: the amount of pressure needed to ensure adequate oxygen and nutrients are delivered by the blood to the brain.
concussion vs ICP
Concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury
There is no way to show a concussion on diagnostic testing
what happens to the brain after an injury?
brain swelling cerebral edema increased ICP Ishemia Brain cell damaged
what is normal ICP?
10-15
