Neuro system Flashcards
What are the two parts of the neurological system?
- Central Nervous system which contains the brain and spinal cord
- Peripheral Nervous system
Average weigh of brain
1.4kg (average 2% of avergae body weight)
How many neurons does it have?
approx. 100 billion
Layers of the meninges
- dura mater (lining the skull)
- subdural space
- arachnoid mater- impermeable layer
- sub-araichnod mater- contains celebrospinal fluid (csf)
- pia mater- adheres to the brain/spinal cord
function of celebrospinal fluid?
to provide cushioning for brain and spinal cord
what’s the falx cebri?
the fold in the dura mater to separate right and left hemisphere
what are the folds of the brain called?
Gyri
what are the fissures called?
sulci
what is the telencephalon?
cerebrum
what does the diencephalon contain?
thalamus and hypothalamus
what is the mesencephalon?
mid brain
what is the myelecephalon?
medulla oblongata
what is the spinal medulla?
spinal cold
function of the telencephalon (cerebrum)?
controls conscious activities of brain
where does the olfactory nerve (I) reside?
cerebrum
what joins the two hemispheres of the cerebrum?
corpus callosum with a bundle of neurons called tract
how many regions of lobes does the telencephalon have?
four lobes: frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal
what are the two surfaces of the telencephalon (cerebrum)?
cerebral cortex (grey matter- unmyelinated) and cerebral medulla (white matter- myeelinated)
where does the optic nerve (II) and optic chiasm originate?
diencephalon
where does the occculomotor nerve (III) and troclear nerve (IV) originate?
mesencephalon (mid brain)
what is the superior colluculus for of the midbraain mesencenphalon?
visual reflex system
what is the inferior colluculus for of the midbrain- mesencenphalon?
auditory system
