Neuro Rehab Approaches Flashcards
Systems Theory of Movement includes which 3 components?
Individual, Task, Environment
Individual includes which 3 components?
Cognition, Perception (sensory), Action
Task includes which 3 components?
Stability, Mobility, Manipulation
Environment includes which 2 components?
Regulatory and Non-regulatory
What is the Bobath Approach?
Mobilises soft tissue before selectively activating normal movement patterns in correct alignment. Uses neuro-facilitatory handling via key points of control
What is Task-Oriented Approach?
Uses biomechanical approach and skill acquisition with extensive & intensive practice. Makes tasks context-specific and gives feedback on performance
What factors affect neuro rehab?
Type of CNS damage; personal characteristics; environment; staff knowledge/skills; communication; pre-morbid state. Overall, the patient’s ability to re-learn skills
What is neuroplasticity?
Brain’s ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections. Facilitates ‘carry over’ of improvements from one session to the next
Name some mechanisms of neuroplasticity
- Synaptogenesis
- Denervation supersensitivity
- Neural regeneration
- Collateral sprouting
- Unmasking of silent synapses
What is synaptogenesis?
Formation of new synapses
What is denervation supersensitivity?
A hyperactive response from post-synaptic membrane to a neurotransmitter after being denervated, leading to formation of new receptors
What is collateral sprouting?
Intact adjacent neurons ‘sprout’ to innervate affected synaptic sites
