Opposes effects of acetylcholine
Antiepileptic
Drug used to treat epilepsy
Antipsychotic
used to treat psychotic disorders
Amnesia
loss of memory
Analgesic
loss of pain
Anesthetic
loss of sensation
Antipyretic
fever reducer
Anxiolytic
reduces anxiety
Dopaminergic
increases dopamine.
Hypnosis
extreme sedation
Narcotics
drugs derived from opium
Neuroleptic
neurological adverse effects when treating psychiatric disorders
Parasympathetic Nervous System
“Rest & Digest”
Decreased HR/BP/RR
Increased GI motility
Sedation
loss of awareness and reaction to environmental
Sympathetic Nervous System
“Fight or Flight”
Valium
diazepam
diazepam pharm. class
Benzodiazepine
diazepam ther. class
Anxiolytic
Anticonvulsant
sedation/hypnotic
diazepam MOA
Enhance the effects of GABA, calming neurotransmitter, to depress the CNS and suppress anxiety
and seizure activity
diazepam adverse effects
CNS depression but risk of acute toxicity.
-Amnesia
-Withdrawal effects (insomnia, anxiety, tremors)
-anxiety
-respiratory depression
excessive fatigue
diazepam Interactions
-Opioids increase risk of respiratory depression
- Alcohol increase CNS effects
diazepam contraindications
Pregnancy
sleep apnea
respiratory depression
glaucoma
older adults
liver disease
diazepam nursing interventions and education
-antidote (Flumazenil for Benzos or Naloxone for opioids)
-risk for addiction
-avoid alcohol
-black box warning: do not combine with opioids or alcohol due to risk of CNS/respiratory depression
