Neuro I Flashcards
1
Q
Lumbar Puncture (Spinal Tap)
A
- invasive procedure that is used to remove a sample of cerebral spinal fluid
- no longer commonly used to assess CNS disorders
- USED TO: detect pathological conditions; measure CSF pressure (to diagnose hydrocephalus); administer contrast dye to spinal canal for imaging scans; administer anesthesia to spinal cord; relieve hydrocephalus
- CAN INDICATE: CNS infection (meningitis, encephalitis); space-occupying lesions og subarachnoid space; multiple sclerosis; acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (Gullain-Barre syndrome); Neuroimmunologic disorders
