Q

Describe structure of spinal cord

A

Cervical 1-7 occurs above the vertebrae c8 below/ Thoracic1-12. This is where spinal cord end and the bundle of nerve fibres going down are called cauda equine. The space that occupies the cauda equine = lumbar cistern. Then you have Lumbar 1-5 and Sacral 1-5.

Q

Function of spinal cord

A
  1. Connects PNS and ANS to brain
  2. Sends sensory signals to brain
  3. Carries motor signals to muscle
  4. Coordinates reflex - synapses in grey matter

Q

What does brain stem contain

A

nuclei of 10 of 12 cranial nerves

All motor and sensory nerves to spine, cerebrum and cerebellum run through this.

16
Q

What do cranial nerves control

A

Are vital for essential body functions - hr, breathing, swelling, bp
Responsible for defensive reflexes (cough, gag, sneeze…)
Involved in sleep-wake cycles, alertness and consciousness

17
Q

Where do motor tract cross in medulla (place where nerves cross from left to right)

A

enlarged, decussation of pyramids

18
Q

Which part of brainstem is connected to cerebellum

A

pons
