Neuro 8 Flashcards
How many pairs of nerves in spinal cord
31 pairs
What is spinal cord
column of nervous tissue protected by vertebrae column
Describe structure of spinal cord
Cervical 1-7 occurs above the vertebrae c8 below/ Thoracic1-12. This is where spinal cord end and the bundle of nerve fibres going down are called cauda equine. The space that occupies the cauda equine = lumbar cistern. Then you have Lumbar 1-5 and Sacral 1-5.
What nerves originate between coccyx
coccygeal nerves
What is name given to bundle of nerves after spinal cord ends
cauda equine
Area where cauda equine is in
lumbar cistern
Dermatome definition
Area of skin innervated by specific nerve
Myotome
Area of muscle innervated by specific nerve
In dorsal root where are cell bodies found, in ventral root where are cell bodies found
ventral root ganglion
grey matter
Function of spinal cord
- Connects PNS and ANS to brain
- Sends sensory signals to brain
- Carries motor signals to muscle
- Coordinates reflex - synapses in grey matter
What 3 main parts is brain split into
Cerebrum, brain stem, cerebellum
What is part of brain stem
Medulla oblongata, pons and midbrain
What is cerebrum split into
thalamus, hypothalamus, cerebral hemisphere
What is thalamus and hypothalamus together called
diencephalon
What does brain stem contain
nuclei of 10 of 12 cranial nerves
All motor and sensory nerves to spine, cerebrum and cerebellum run through this.
