Neuro Flashcards
To open the skull by drilling
Trephine
Ringing in the ears
Tinnitus
A fold of dura mater between the cerebrum and cerebellum which supports the occipital lobes
Tentorium
Structures of the brain above the tentorium
Supratentorial
Under the dura
Subdural
State is seriously impaired consciousness; patient responds only to noxious external stimuli
Stupor
Consecutive convulsions with uninterrupted unconsciousness
Status epileptics
Degeneration of a joint, often the vertebrae
Spondylosis
Unnatural drowsiness
Somnolence
Involuntary response to a stimulus
Reflex
Disease condition involving a spinal nerve root
Radiculopathy
A dropping of the upper eyelid
Ptosis
Abnormal sensitivity to light
Photophobia
Persistent morbid fear
Phobia
Awake, but unaware of surroundings. May respond to stimuli or moan, but otherwise unresponsive
Persistent vegetative state
Paralysis of the lower extremities
Paraplegia
Swelling of the optic nerve head “choked disc”
Papilledema
Body spasms in which body arches in a curve, with only head and heels touching a surface. -/seen in meningitis & other diseases
Opisthotonos
Having diminished arousal and awareness d/t intoxication, medication, metabolic illness, or neurological damage
Obtunded
Discharge from the ear; if discharge is clear after head trauma, surgery , etc=may be CSF and must be checked for glucose content
Otorrhea
Involuntary rapid eye movements
Nystagmus
Stiff neck
Nuchal rigidity
Due to brainstem damage. Awake & alert, but unable to respond or move
Locked-in Syndrome
Unresponsive, except to painful stimuli
Light coma
Drowsiness
Lethargy
Condition resulting from prolonged toxic effects of alcohol on the brain-/displayed by memory loss (particularly for recent events)
Korsakoff’s syndrome
Resistance to extension of the lower leg when the thought is flexed at the abdomen. This is a sign of meningeal irritation
Kernig’s sign
