Neural Tube and other defects Flashcards
Discuss meningomyelocele (Spina bifida Cystica).
incomplete closure of the posterior spine
dysplastic spinal cord as well as meninges,
nerve roots, and CSF
Lumbar spine common
nerves become trapped in the mass as spine grows caudally, spinal cord is pulled down
Herniation of the meninge and spinal cord
What are the associated abnormalities with spinal bifida Cystica?
Arnold Chiari
malformation, dislocated hips, bowel or
bladder dysfunction, and lower
extremity weakness are all common comorbidities.
Discuss meningocele (spina bifida cyctica)
less severe, herniation of meninges only
Discuss lipomeyelomeningocele.
Fatty mass under skin
middle of back, large lump
grows inwards to spinal cord
spinal cord can attach to it and it can put pressure on the spinal cord.
Discuss Spina bifida occulta.
The incompletion of vertebrae growth but not herniation of the meninges and spinal cord
Discuss lipomeningocele.
Intraspinal lipoma associated with spina bifida
grows beneath the meninges, but doesn’t tether the spinal cord.
What is the term used to name a meningomyelocele in the scapular region?
limited dorsal myeloschisis
Discuss Congenital dermal sinus in sacral region.
A scaly, multi-layered channel of tissue found along the midline anywhere between the nasal bridge and the sacrum.
Tract may end just below the skin surface or may extend to portions of the spinal cord, skull base or nasal cavity
dimple or a sinus (open tract), with or without hairs, usually very close to the midline
Tracts are a potential pathway for infections within the dura mater and may result in meningitis and/or an abscess.
What is encephalocoele?
NTD: sac like protrusions of the brain through the opening of the skull, incomplete closure of the cranium
Describe Iniencephaly.
Extreme extension of head to spine.
head bent back and face looks up
neck absent
Describe myeloschisis.
Missing roof plate, vertebral arch and skin
