neural mechanisms Flashcards
what is the limbic system
what does it do
it mediates emotional states and memory processes, only exists in mammals
what makes up the limbic system
amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamus
what does the amygdala play a role in
aggression, eating, drinking and sexual behaviours
what does the hippocampus play a role in
memory, learning and emotion
what does the hypothalamus do
regulates processes in the body through its connection to the CNS, ANS and endocrine system
how does the amygdala work(ie respond to threats)
evaluates sensory input and decides upon appropriate responses
the more reactive environmental threats, the more likely aggression will be shown
what happens if amygdala is damaged
aggressive behaviour will result
what are the effects of serotonin
widespread inhibitory effects in the brain so slows down neuronal activity
what are normal levels of serotonin in the OFC linked with
reduced firing of neurones which is associated w greater behavioural self control, so reduced aggression
what happens if there is decreased serotonin
it disturbs the mechanism which reduces self control and increases impulsive behaviour, including aggression
limitation of the limbic system explanation
recent research shows non limbic brain structures are also involved in aggression , such as OFC
