Neural & Hormonal Mechanisms Flashcards
Identify the components of the Limbic system
Hypothalamus

Amygdala
Hippocampus
Thalamus
Outline the neural mechanisms in aggression
Limbic system
Serotonin
Outline the role of the limbic system in aggression
-Most important structure = amygdala
-Key role in humans & non-humans animal in how organism assesses & responds to environmental threats & challenges
-Reactivity of amygdala in humans = important predictor of aggressive behaviour
-Gospic et al. (2011) used lab method of assessing aggressive behaviour called Ultimatum Game
-Proposer offers to split money in certain way, if responder accepts, money shared, if not, nobody gets any
-Responders had brains scanned by fMRI & when rejecting unfair offers = fast & heightened response in amygdala
-Benzodiazepine taken before = halved rejections & decreased activity of amygdala
Outline the role of serotonin in aggression
