Neural and Hormonal Mechanisms Flashcards
What levels of what neurotransmitters are associated with increased aggression?
LOW serotonin
HIGH dopamine
What does serotonin do?
It normally inhibits responses to emotional stimuli that might lead to an aggressive response.
What does dexfenfluramine do?
It depletes serotonin in the brain and led to an increase in aggression in males but not females.
What do amphetamines do?
They increase dopamine activity and increase aggressive behaviour.
What do antipsychotics do?
They reduce dopamine activity and reduce aggressive behaviour.
How does testosterone affect aggression levels?
Influences aggression levels through action on brain areas associated with aggressive behaviour. Testosterone levels are high among violent criminals.
What is the challenge hypothesis?
That testosterone levels rise in response to social challenges like keeping a mate or fighting for one.
What does cortisol do?
High levels inhibit testosterone and inhibit aggression.
