Neural Anatomy & Physiology Flashcards
Motor Neurons
Receives impulses for muscular movement along with hormonal secretions
Sensory Neurons
Receives sensory information from the environment and sends it to the CNS
Interneurons
“Go-betweens” that connect one neuron to another
Neurotransmitters
Small Molecule & Large Molecule
Small Molecule Neurotransmitters
Acetylcholine, Serotonin, Dopamine, Norepinephrine, Glutamine, Histamine, Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA)
Large Molecule Neurotransmitters
Vasopressin, Somatostatin, Neurotensin, Enkephalin, Endorphins
Acetylcholine
Primary neurotransmitter of the PNS
Serotonin
Controls mood, memory, learning, regulates sleep, involved with perception of pain, appetite, body temperature, blood pressure, and hormonal functions
Dopamine
Concentrated in the basal ganglia, involved with movement regulation, cognition, and motivation
Norepinephrine
Found in pons and medulla, functions to maintain attention, focus, wakefulness, arousal, and fight or flight response
Glutamine
Stimulates fast excitatory response in brainstem and spinal cord
Histamine
Stimulates local immune response and widespread inflammatory responses
Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA)
Inhibits motor movement
Large Molecule Neurotransmitters
Vasopressin, Somatostatin, Neurotensin, Enkephalin, and Endorphins
Vasopressin
Regulates water, glucose, and salt in the body
