Networks Revision Flashcards
What is a network
Two or more devices connected together to communicate with each other to share useful resources
What is a TCP
Transmission Control Protocol
Where is a TCP used
Transport layer
What does WiFi mean
Wireless Fidelity
What does IP stand for
Internet protocol
What does UDP stand for
User Datagram Protocol
What is packet switching
Where a message is broken into a number of parts which are then sent
What is a SMTP
Simple Mall Transfer Protocol
What is IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol
What is an FTP
File Transfer Protocol
what is a HTTP and a HTTPS
Hypertext Transfer Protocol
Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure
What is the TCP/IP Model
Application layer
Transport layer
Internet/network layer
Data/link layer
What does the application layer do
Where software operates
What does the Transport layer
Setting up communications between 2 devices.
Splitting data into packets and checking packets are sent to the right place
What does the network layer
Adds IP address to data packets then directs them between devices using routers
What does the data layer
Where the hardware and drivers operate. Passes data over the physical network
Name an advantage of a ring topology
Easy to set up
Less chance of packet collision
Data can transfer between workstations at high speeds.
Name a disadvantage for a ring topology
If 1 connection breaks the whole network will fail
Data must pass through all devices so it’s slow
Name an advantage of a bus topology
Easy to install
Cheap as it doesn’t require a lot of wires
Don’t have t9 have a switch like the star topology
Name an disadvantage of a bus topology
If the mainstream cable falls out the whole network will fail
More devices causes more collisions
Difficult to identify problems
Not meant to be used for a stand-alone solution
Name an advantage of a star topology
Very reliable
High performing as there will be no data collisions
Name an disadvantage of a star topology
Expensive to set up
Complicated to set up
If the hub fails all devices will have no network connection
Function of NIC
Needs to be able to connect a network
Adapts signals between the network and device
Function of a switch
Lots of ports to connect to devices in a LAN
Forward packets to devices in other segments of the LAN
Function of a router
Forwards packets between two networks
Function of a WAP
Allows wireless connection to a wired network using the Wi-Fi standard
What does PAN mean
Personal Area Network
What is an example of a PAN
A phone connecting to a laptop
what does LAN mean
Local Area Network
What is an example of a LAN
School building
What does WAN mean
Wide Area Network
What is an example of a WAN
The internet
