Networks Intro 1 Flashcards
Packet Transmission Delay Formula
L (bits) / R (bits/sec)
What is a distributed system?
Hardware or software components located at network computers communicate and coordinate their actions only by passing messages
What do distributed systems allow for?
- Concurrency
- No single global notion of the correct time
- Each component in a network can fail independently
What is intranet?
A part of the internet that is separately administered and uses a firewall to enforce its own local security policies. Users in an intranet share share data by means of file services
What is firewall?
A network security system that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing traffic based on predetermined security rules
Establishes a barrier between a trusted internal network and an untrusted external network.
Generally categorised as network-based or host-based
Circuit Switched vs Packet Switched Network
Circuit Switching requires a physical connection between 2 nodes.
Packet Switching sends packets of data between 2 computers
What advantages does a circuit-switched network have over a packet-switched network?
More reliable in that it guarantees bandwidth. Good for something that needs consistent, reliable network connection, such as voice calls.
