Networks and Topologies Flashcards
Network
2 or more devices connected together in order to share resources
Topology
The physical configuration of a network that determines how the network’s computers are connected
Client Server
A network setup that utilizes both clients and servers.
Peer to Peer
A network that does not have a central computer or dedicated server.
Wireless Access Point (WAP)
A wireless receiver for connecting wirelessly to a network or the Internet
Router
Designed to receive, analyse and move incoming packets to another network.
Switch
A hardware device that filters and forwards network packets to the intended recipient.
Hub
The most basic networking device that connects multiple computers or other network devices together.. Broadcasts messages to all nodes, regardless of the intended recipient.
Network Interface Card
A computer expansion card for connecting to a network
IP Address
An IP address is a number identifying of a computer or another device on the Internet.
Media Access Control (MAC) Address
Physical address and hardware address whose number is uniquely formatted in hexadecimal format and given to each computer or network device on a computer network.
Star Topology
Every node connects to a central network device, like a hub, switch, or computer.
Full Mesh Topology
A mesh topology is a network setup where each computer and network device is interconnected with one another.
Partial Mesh Topology
A partial mesh topology is a network setup where some but not all of the computers and network devices is interconnected with one another.
Server
A computer that shares its resources and information with other computers, called clients, on a network.
