Networks and the internet Flashcards
What is a network
: A series
of interconnected nodes (connection points) that
are able to transmit,
receive and exchange
data of various formats
TALK AB0UT PAN
(Personal Area Network) Smallest type of network and consists of the connected devices that are in close proximity to an individual. (Wirelessly connecting phone to laptop)
Talk about LAN
(Local Area Network) A group of computers or devices that are connected on a single site. (WiFi connection at school)
Talk about MAN
(Metropolitan Area Network) Network that covers a large geographical area, such as a city. (governments providing free wife access to residents in a city)
Talk about WAN
( Wide Area Network) A national or international network, like the internet.
What is a wired network
Networks/devices that are connected with the use of wires.
What makes fibre optic cables better
Better connectivity
Cover greater distances
Faster speed
Transfer data more securely
What is a wireless network
Use of wireless technologies to connect different nodes to form a network.
client server network
Type of network where data is stored centrally on a server and access is given to each device connected to the network.
Peer to peer network
A decentralized network where every person is equally responsible for storing and sharing data
Components of computing networks, talk about network interface cards
Device responsible for converting data into a digital signal and communicating this data to a network
MAC address
Unique identifier assigned to every piece of hardware
Router
A networking technology that transfers networks from one point to the other using the most efficient route available
Modem
Device that converts digital data to analogue data so that it can be transmitted over a telephone line
Wireless Access Point (WAP)
Device that creates a wireless local area network to improve coverage throughout a building
