Networks and Security Flashcards
What is the order of the TCP/IP model?
Application layer, Transport layer, Internet layer/ Network layer, Link layer/Data layer
What are the two main types of network topologies?
The star and bus topologies
What are some advantages and some disadvantages of the star topology?
Advantages: There are fewer data collisions, fast as data is transferred to the switch, if a device fails the rest of the network is not affected.
Disadvantages: The cost can be expensive, if the switch fails so will the rest of the network
What are some advantages and some disadvantages of the bus topology?
Advantages: One device failing does not impact the rest of the network, it does not require a switch.
Disadvantages: Slow speed, if the main cable fails so does the rest of the network, more data collisions
What are some advantages of copper cable/ ethernet?
Relatively inexpensive
Reliable
Easy to set up
Less susceptible to interference
What are some of the disadvantages of copper cable/ ethernet?
Limited mobility
Slow speed
What are some advantages of fibre optic cable?
Reliable
Fast speed
Less susceptible to interference
Need for signal boosters is lessened
What are some disadvantages of fibre optic cable?
Limited mobility
Expensive
Difficult to set up
What are some advantages of wireless?
Cheap cost
Easy to set up
No limited range
What are some disadvantages of wireless?
Not reliable
More susceptible to interference
Less protected
What is a LAN?
A network that covers a small geographical profile.
What is a WAN?
A network that covers a large geographical area.
What is a PAN?
A network that covers a very short area.
What is a computer network?
Two or more devices that are connected together for the purpose of communication.
What are some of the advantages of a network?
Communication File sharing Centralised security Peripherals can be shared shared storage remote monitoring & updates
