networks and network connectors Flashcards
what is a network
a group of computers communicating with each other
any device that sends and receives information on the network
a host
examples of host devices
tablet, voip phone, server, laptop printer camera
devices that exist in between the host devices. These devices ensure that data flows from one host device to another host device.
intermediary devices( switch, modem router, wireless router access point)
is used to connect multiple devices to the network
a switch
Used to connect two or more networks to form an internetwork. They are used in
LANs WANs and on the Internet. This device routes data from one location to another
router
A device that is used to lengthen the signal farther than it was designed
to go originally
repeater/ extender
is an Ethernet standard that allows for the passing of electrical
power in addition to data over Ethernet cabling
POE (power over Ethernet)
is measured in the number of bits that can be sent every second.
bandwidth b/s - bits per second kb/s - kilobits per second Mb/s - megabits per second Gb/s - gigabits per second
The amount of time it takes data to travel from source to destination
latency
a single, one-way transmission..
Simplex
the channel of communications allows alternating transmission in two directions, but not in both directions simultaneously.
half duplex
When data flows in both directions at the same time
full duplex
a network that encompasses a small geographical area
LAN -local area network
what identifies a computer network
Size of the area covered
Number of users connected
Number and types of services available
Area of responsibility
