What is the internet
A global network of networked computers
What is the World Wide Web
It is the collection of web pages and sites that are held on the internet
What is a web browser
It is a piece of software that displays or reads the content of the web pages and uses HTML code
What is an intranet
It is a private website that can only be accessed by members of an organisation or employees of a company that have been given access through an username and password to a private site
What is an extranet
It is a website that allows limited access to external bodies e.g customers, suppliers etc who can access only the areas that are specific to them and can only view or edit their own details. They must have a username and password that allows and gives the correct access.
Peer to Peer networks
It is a network of computers of up to 20 machines that are linked together through wired or wireless connection. They can share data but all programs are loaded on each machine.
Client Server networks
This is a network were large numbers of computers are linked through a server or serves using Ethernet, fibre optic or UTP unshielded Twisted Pair cabling
What is a Wireless network
It uses radio waves same as TV, radio and mobile phone to make a link it uses Wi-Fi. They are used in hotels, libraries, coffee shops, airports etc for general use.
What is VoIP
This stands for Voice over Internet protocols and allows people to speak, video conference over the internet using appropriate software
