Define Local Area Network
A set of connected computers confined to a relatively small area. They are connected to a switching device that is then connected to the internet.
Define Wide Area Network
A set of connected computers connected over a wide area. Risk of failure is much greater
What is a twisted pair cable?
A cable that consists of four pairs of copper wires twisted together in a shielded cable.
What is a fibre optic cable?
A cable that consists of a bundle of light conducting fibres in a shielded cable
What is a terrestrial radio channel?
Links two or more mobile computers via a base station
Define a switch
A switch is a special purpose hardware device dedicated to interconnecting hosts using the same packet format
Define a router
A router is special purpose hardware dedicated to interconnecting networks that may use different technologies, addressing schemes or packet formats
What is a routing / forwarding table?
A set of data that is tells the router the best route to each destination. It does not describe the entire route, just the next step along the network
