Networks Flashcards
Describe what is meant by the term ‘WAN’.
- Wide area network
- collection of connected computers/devices over a large geographic area
- oftern using 3rd party communication channels.
Explain why protocols are important on a network.
- Allows for communication
- By ensuring all devices follow the same rules/ standards
- so they interpret data/signals in the same way.
State the name of the four layers of TCP/IP
Application
Transport
Internet
Network interface /(data) link/ physical
What are the advantages of using a network?
- Can share hardware between devices
- can share data easily between devices
What is a LAN?
A local area network, A group of connected devices over a small geopgrahical area
How does a WAN differ from a LAN?
A WAN consists of many interconnected LANs OVER a much larger area.
What is a protocol
A set of rules for communication between two devices.
What are the layers of the TCP-IP stack
Aplication
Transport,
internet,
link
What is the purpose of an IP address
A unique indentifying address for a network
What is circuit switching?
When a particular link is in use, it cannot be used by another connection for the duration.
Why is packet switching important?
if a particular route is down, then the data can still reach it’s destinationn without issue.
What secuirty measures can be taken to protect a private network?
- hide SSID
- limit access to specific MAC addresses
- Use a firewall to block out unwanted traffic.
- Encrypt all data sent from the network.
Advantages of client-side processing
- Reduced load on the servers
- reduce data traffic
- faster reponse time.
Advantages of server-side processing
-Better secuity, as none of the processing is done by the client
What factors affect a pages rank on a search
- The numbe of outward links on the page
- The numbers of links pointing to the page
- The rank of the pages pointing to it.
