Networks Flashcards
What is a computer network?
A set of interconnected computers that use common digital protocols and may use wired or wireless connections to share resources.
Describe networked systems
A computer system often involves lots of users carrying out tasks. Conventional design is to have multiple users connect to a single server which can allocate resources and communicate with computers on the network.
Describe some historical networks and how they came to be.
Napoleon’s Network: A series of mechanical devices that could send signals that were read using a telescope from a distance. Called “tele-graph” meaning far and write.
Electric Telegraph: Developed by the Victorians. Consisted of a network of wires that could send electric signals using Morse code. Rapid adoption. Asynchronous.
Telephone Network: Synchronous communication. People can now talk in real time. The telephone network used that same network as the telegraph network.
