Networks Flashcards
Topology
Architecture used to interconnect networking equipment
Deterministic Network
Access to the network is provided at fixed time intervals.
Logical Topology
How end user views communications.
Physical Topology
Actual hardware topology
Multiport Repeater
Hub
Receives signal from a device and broadcasts it to all devices on network regardless of target.
Switch
Receives signal from a device and delivers it to the target device.
OSI
Open Systems Inter-connectivity Model
MAC
Media Access Control
Physical address of device.
48 bit hexadecimal number.
AKA Ethernet / hardware / adapter address
Data Encapsulation
Information added as data moves down the model.
Data De-encapsulation
Information removed as data moves up the model
Networking Protocol used in most modern computer networks
Ethernet
CSMA/CD
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection
Protocol for local area networks
Before a computer talks on the network it listens for traffic (CS), any computer on LAN can access network (MA), system can detect collisions (CD).
OUI
Organizationally Unique Identifier
First 6 digits of MAC indicating vendor
IANA
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority
Agency that assigns IP addresses to computer networks
Network Number
Portion of IP address defining which network is the source / destination
Host Number
Portion of IP address defining which device is the source / destination
Wired Network
Faster data transfer speeds, inexpensive setup, not susceptible to outside interference.
Connections require specialized tools, cable installation can be labor intensive / expensive
Wireless Network
Mobile users, simple installation, no cables.
Security issues, slower data transfer speeds.
Range Extender
Relays wireless signals from an access point into areas with a weak signal
NAT
Network Address Translation
ISP issues routable public IP address to router. Devices using router have internal addresses only but connect to outside network via public IP address.
Link Integrity Test
Protocol used to verify communication link between two Ethernet devices is established
SPI
Stateful Packet Inspection
Firewall that inspects incoming data packets to ensure they match outgoing requests
Uplink Port
Allows connection of a switch to another switch without using a crossover cable
Frame
Provides grouping of information for transmission
Network Adapters
Typically a NIC (network interface card)
Router
Connects two or more networks using a single connection to ISP
Access Point
Interconnects wireless devices and provides a connection to the wired LAN
Wireless Router
Combines router, switch, WAP.
Uses RF
Cable Modem
Makes broadband network connection from home network to ISP using a cable connection.
Broadband modem/gateway
High-speed data access via cable or DSL connection.
Combines modem and router.
DSL Modem
Broadband network connection from home network to ISP via telephone line.
