Networks Flashcards
What is a Network?
A network is two or more devices connected to each other with a physical medium, such as wires or radios signals allowing them to exchange data.
What is a LAN?
A local area network is a group of computers or devices that are confined to a small geographical area, share a common communication medium(cables or wirless) and are connected to a central connecting device like a hub, switch or router.
What is network documentation?
Defines, describes and explains the physical and logical method for connecting devices.
What are central connecting devices?
Hub, switch, router.
What is the purpose of central connecting devices?
To relay data between host machines.
What is a host?
Any device with an IP address.
What do hubs do?
They receive data from hosts and broadcast to all other hosts on that network. Very dated!
What do switches do?
They send and receive data simultaneously and direct the data to its intended destination.
What are routers?
They connect us to the internet and act as a gateway to other networks, they allow communication between hosts on different networks.
How do devices connect?
Through network adapters aka. Network interface cards (NICs) allow computers to connect to networks.
What ports do wired network adapters use?
RJ45
How do wireless network adapters connect to networks?
By using wireless network points (WAPs)
What are WAPs connected to?
Switches and routers.
How is data transfer rate measured?
Mega bits per second (MbPS) the bitrate.
What are frames?
A sequence of bits containing a detectable beginning and end of a packet in the stream of bits.
