define the term computer network
a group of two or more electronic devices that are connected together to share information or resources.
describe the pros of using a network (5)
- sharing files is easier
- sharing hardware like printers between multiple devices
- you can install and update software on all computers at once rather than one by one
- you can communicate across a network cheaply and easily eg. email
- user accounts can be stored centrally so users can log in from any device on the network.
describe the cons of setting up a network (4)
- they can be expensive to set up as they need a lot of extra hardware
- networks can be vulnerable to hacking
- some networks are dependant on one or more servers and if the servers go down it can be very disruptive for people trying to use the network
- large networks are difficult to manage and may require specialist staff to maintain them
What is a PAN?
PAN is a personal area network that connects devices over a very short range.
what are PANs usually used for?
often used to transmit data between mobile/weaable devices. They often use bluetooth technology.
pros of PANs (3)
- bluetooth connections are very strong
- dont require any additional hardware
- can be created on the move

Local Area Network that covers a small geographical area located on a single site.

what is a WAN?
Wide Area Network that connects LANs that are in different geographical locations.
