Networks Flashcards
Connectivity
- Ability of systems and devices to communicate with each other, share resources and exchange data.
Wireless Revolution
- Rapid adoption of wireless technologies (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 5G,…)
Communication Systems
- Technologies infrastructure
- enables data transmission
Physical Communication Channels (Wired data transmission)
- Twisted Pair Cables : used LAN Connections (traditional phone lines)
- Coaxial Cables : used for cable TV
- Fiber Optic Cables : transmies data through light at high speed.
Wireless Communication Channels
- Radio Waves (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Cellular Network) : Wireless Comm. over short and long distances.
- Microwaves (Satellite Communication) : long distance.
- Infrared: Short range comm.
Connection Devices and Services
- Digital Subscriber Line : data transmission through phone lines
- Cable : Highspeed internet via TV cables
- Satellite : Internet Connectivity through satellite orbiting the earth.
-Cellular (3G, G, 5G): wireless internet via cellular network.
Data Transmission Factors
- Bandwidth : amount of data that can be transmitted over a network in a given amount of time.
- Protocol: rules that govern data transmission
> TCP/IP : ensures data is sent and received properly
> HTTP/HTTPS : encryption for security for web comm.
> FTP : Used for transferring files between systems.
Networks
-Def: Group of devices that can communicate and share resources
- Network Interface Card : hardware that allows a device to connect to a network
- Network OS : manages network resources
Types of Networks
-Local Area Network (LAN) : small area
-Home Area Network(HAN) : type of LAN for home
-Wireless LAN : uses wireless tech for connectivity
- Personal Area Network : uses Bluetooth, for personal use only.
- Metropolitan Area Network : connects multiple LANs in a city.
- Wide Area Network : Connects LANs over long distances.
Network Topologies
- Bus : common comm. line
- Star : connected via central server or hub
- Ring : connected through circular chain
- Mesh : redundancy
Network Strategies
-Client-Server : central server provides services to clients
- Peer to peer : sharing resources directly with each other (devices)
Organizational Issues
- Managing Net. requires infrastructure, regular updates, and maintenance.
- Net. Security (Protecting Data, Malware, Cyberattacks,…)
Network Security
-Firewalls
-Encryption
-Antivirus Software
-Multi-Factor Identification
