Networks Flashcards
Explain what is meant by LAN
network used for a small geographical area
Explain what is meant by WAN
(explain why each example given is for WAN)
Network used on a large geographical area
(cloud storage, instant messaging)
Explain what is meant by VLE
A Virtual Learning Network (firefly)
Explain what is meant by Network
Connection of devices used to share and communicate resources
Explain what is meant by Internet
Global connection of devices used to communicate and share data
Explain what is meant by VPN
Virtual Personal Network
Protects the user by encrypting personal data
What are VPN’s used for?
Security
(Often used by companies to keep their employees safe when in abroad offices)
Explain what is meant by Protocol
A set of rules used to control how devices operate in a network
Explain what is meant by IP Address
A unique set of numbers used to identify a device in a network
Explain what is meant by Upload
When data files are being sent to the cloud
Explain what is meant by Download
When data files are being received from the cloud
Describe the benefits of connecting devices to a network (individuals)
Instant access, send instant messages
Describe the benefits of connecting devices to a network (organization)
Improves collaboration and central data hub that everyone can access
Describe the benefits of connecting devices to a network (society)
Individuals can access resources, healthcare services, and gov. info
Explain what is meant by WPAN
Wireless Personal Area Network
Network of personal devices connected individually.
Give an example of IPV4 Address
192.168.2.146
Explain what is meant by Bandwidth
The amt. of data that can be carried by a connection in one second
Explain what is meant by Lantency
The delay between data being sent and received
What causes Latency?
Data packets collide on the same route in a network
You are trying to send a large video file to your friend, but it takes a long time to load. In the end, the file doesn’t go through, and Whatsapp asks you to re-send it.
Suggest what is happening in terms of data packets. [5]
• Large video file -> large file size
• Large file size -> latency
• Data packets are separated in the network on different routes (to reach your friend)
• Data packets are labeled in order
• Your friend’s phone will have to re-order the (correctly)
• Some data packets are lost
• App asks for re-send because not all packets were transferred
Suggest a method to decrease latency [1]
• Increase bandwidth
• Decrease file size
Describe a Packet Switch Network. [3]
• Data is broken up into packets
• router searches for shortest route
Describe a Circuit Switch Network [3]
• Old Network
• Send digital messages across a network
• Operated by Telephone exchanges
• Connections made with wires
State the formula for file size, transmission speed, and speed (with units)
• File size = transmission speed * time
• bits = bps * sec.
State what is meant by WAP. [2]
• provides wireless access to a (wired) network
• does NOT provide internet access
State what is meant by Router. [2]
• moves data from one network to another
• connects a network to the internet
State what is meant by Switch. [2]
• connects data to the correct (wired) device
• required a network with multiple wired connections
State what is meant by Hub. [2]
• (copies and sends) incoming data to all other connected devices
• connects multiple wired devices together
State what is meant by NIC. [2]
• Network Interface Card
• enables a wired network connection
• (between) a computer and another networked device
State what is meant by Bridge. [2]
• helps reduce traffic by segmenting network
• (connects) a LAN to a LAN
State what is meant by MAC Address. [2]
• Media Access Control address
• unique physical address
• used to locate devices (in a network)
