Where acsess is provided to a organizations network to users outside the organization

Run most of there applications from local hard drives and make little use of network services

User connect to internet via this server so security control for viruses can be implemented at one central point. Also caches search history
Intranet
Private internet like environment consisting of relevant webeites
Locally owned network(Lan)
A privately owned network connecting computers in a small area
Network
A collection of computers connected by some form of communication media
Network operating system
A system that controls all the communication of a network
Network security
Policies put in place to ensure the security of a network by preventing unauthorized access
Peers
Other computers that use and provide network resources
Peer to peer networks
A Lan network where resources are shared among workstations without a dedicated server
Print servers
Used to handle the printing requirements of a network with a large number of computers
Server
A computer that provides shared resources to users
Switch
A hardware device used to connect computers to a network so that communication can occur
