Networks Flashcards
What is a Network
Something that consists of 2 or more nodes that are connected by a type of communication channel
What is a node
Any device connected to the network. This can be a device which users use, connects nodes to each other or provides a service
What is a server
A computer designed to act as a central computer that provides various resources. It has server software which manages logins and user access to computers on the networks.
What is a file server
A server where users store files in a central location and access them from any node
What is a communications channel
This is the connection. It can be bounded or unbounded
Bounded
There are physical cables
Unbounded
Signals are carried across / wireless
What is a switch
This connects nodes in a network using communication cables
What is cloud computing
This is using computing services such as storage, databases, software, networking over the internet known as ‘the cloud’
Backbone cable
When fibre optic cables are used join segments of a network together especially when they’re in different buildings
The types of microwave
terrestrial and Satellite
What is terrestrial microwave
use line of sight to transmit data between two antennae
What is satellite microwave
These use satellites which orbit earth to receive and pass on communications
Advantages of Fibre Optic Cable
- Supports faster transmission rates
- More secure than UTP
- Not susceptible to interference
- Immune to lightning and electrical surges
What does it mean to geo-stationery
This is when a satellite is in a fixed position and rotates at the same speed as the Earth
