What is a Hub?
A hub copies all data packs to all devices on the network, but only the device that requires the data will recognise and accept it.
What is a Switch?
A switch goes through data and is able to send it to the intended user by going through their MAC addresses.
What is a Router?
A router stores the addresses of computers on the network and transfers data between devices. It is also used to send data to the internet.
What is a Bridge?
A bridge connects two networks that use the same base protocol. (LAN to LAN)
What is a Gateway?
A gateway connects two networks that use different base protocol. (LAN to WAN)
What is a Server?
A server is a piece of computer hardware or software that provides functionality for other programs or devices known as clients.
What is a Client?
A client is a computer/user.
What is a ISP?
An ISP is a company that provides an internet connection for businesses and homes.
What does ISP stand for?
Internet Service Provider.
What is a URL?
A URL is a string providing the full address of the web page, which is also called a web address.
How many pieces are there in a URL?
Up to 5 pieces but, it’s usually 4.
How does your ISP use a URL?
They use it to locate the specific website.
What is a protocol and what it looks like?
A protocol tells web servers which protocol to use when accessing a page on the website. (https://)
What is a second level domain?
A second level domain is the name of your website, it lets users know that they are visiting a website of a particular organisation.
What is a top-level domain?
A top-level domain indicates the type of entity the organisation is registered with on the website.
What is a path?
A path is a subdirectory to a specific webpage, helps identify which part of a website is being used
What is a sub domain?
A sub domain can sub-divide websites into logical blocks such as ‘blogs’, ‘news’ sections etc.
