Networking+ Flashcards
What are the benefits of networking?
- Information sharing
- Hardware and software sharing
- Centralized hardware and support
What is a LAN?
Local Area Network
In what network are all computers equal with no centralized authority?
Peer to peer network
What is one advantage of a peer to peer network
*Easy to install and configure
*individual machines do not depend on the presence of a dedicated server
individual users control their own shared resources
*Inexpensive to purchase and operate
*no additional equipment or software beyond a suitable operating system is needed
*no dedicated administrators are needed to run the network
*works best for networks with 10 or fewer users
What is the difference between a LAN and a WAN
LAN
- Local Area Network
- Small area
WAN
- Wide Area Network
- Spans miles
What does VPN stand for?
Virtual Private Network
How do VPN’s work?
Create secure “tunnels” through the internet
What is the recommended maximum number of computers in a peer to peer network?
10 computers
What does OSI stand for?
Open System Interconnection
What are the levels of the OSI model?
- Application
- Presentation
- Session
- Transport
- Network
- Data Link
- Physical
What is the maximum length for one section of Cat 5 cable?
100 meters
What type of connectors are used for Cat 5 cable?
RJ45
What is a collision domain?
All computers talk to all other computers are the same time
What is a broadcast domain?
Collision domain broken up into segments using switches and routers
How many devices in a collision domain have to listen when a single host talks?
All devices
What is a hub?
Central point for connecting computers in a single network. Unless it is an active hub, it won’t amplify or regenerate the signal, meaning that there can be no more than 100m of cat 5 cable between any two devices connected to the hub.
What is a repeater?
A powered connectivity device that regenerates and amplifies a digital or analog signal
What is a NIC?
Network Interface Card
What does an NIC do?
- Establishes and manages the network connection
- Translates incoming and outgoing data into signals
- determines whether or not incoming signals are meant for the computer
- has Media Access Control (MAC) address encoded into chips
- 12 digit hexadecimal number
What does a router do?
- Connects networks together
- Gateway out of a network
- Adjustable security settings
- Filters out broadcast transmissions
- Monitors network traffic and reports statistics
- LAN and WAN ports
- Allows shared internet connection
What does a firewall do?
- Filters network traffic
- Filters applications’ access to network
- Can be hardware or software
- Services use different ports
What device allows several computers to share a single internet connection?
Router
What advantage does a switch have over a hub?
Switches remember IP addresses and will send intended traffic to the intended device only. Hubs broadcast all traffic to all connected devices.
What device can you use to expand your network?
Router
