Networking Flashcards
What is PAN?
Bluetooth (speakers, earphones, phones)
What is LAN?
Single site (wired and wireless)
What is WAN?
connects multiple sites
What are some advantages of networks?
- Resources can be shared e.g. printers data and internet connection
- communication is very easy because all devices are connected to ther network
- the network can be centrally managed e.g. all data backed up because data is stored centrally on servers
- users data is accessible from anywhere on the network because it is stored centrally.
What are some disadvantages of networks?
- the initial setup cost is high because deivces like routers, switches and cables need to be bought and installed.
- malware can be spread because all devices are connected
- work can be very badly distrupted if the network goes down.
What protocol is wired networking?
Link layer- ethernet
What are benefits of wired networking?
- Greater bandwidth because the switches run much faster than wireless access points.
- Its more stable because the device is directly wired to the switch with a dedicated link.
- Good performance with large number of devices because there are very few collisions because the switch passes the packets/data between the two nodes/devices communicating
- more secure beause a signal can only be intercepted if the device is physically connected.
What are some disadvantages of wired networking?
- There is a neater solution as cables can be hazardous and unsightly.
- not all devices can connect via cable as they dont have the plug to connect e.g. phones and laptops .
- can be expensive as cables have to be set up through all networked rooms.
what protocol is wireless networking?
link layer - WIFI
What are some benefits to wireless networking?
- very easy to connect as the device will connect automatically once the password is input.
- can be used in listed buildings because unsightly wiring does not need to be installed
3.all types of devices can connect whereas you would have to have a device that can connect via a plug - devices can more around while connected to the network because they are not restricted to being attached to a cable.
What are some disadvantages to networking?
- Connection may be slower as technology cannot run as fast as cabled networks.
- subjects to interference from walls, objects and other electronic devices because the signal could be weakened by them.
3.less secure as anyone with a WIFI enabled device can connect.
what are the protocols used for it?
What is the link layer?
Wifi, ethernet
connects devices on the local network segment.
What is the network layer?
- IP
- Routes packets across networks
-addresses individual devices on the network.
What is the transport layer?
-TCP and UDP
- establishes a connection between two communicating nodes
- sequences pockets
What is the application
layer?
- HTTPS, HTTP, SMTP, IMAP, FTP
-establishes communication with the software being used on the device
What is bus topology?
connects all devices to a single shared cable, allowing all devices to recieve the same signal simultaneiously.
What are some advantages to bus topology?
- cheaper to set up because less cable is needed
- easy to install because no central connectivity device is needed.
What are some disadvantages to bus topology?
- as more computers are added to the network, the performance decreases as there are more collisions on the network
- if the main cable fails or is damaged, the whole network goes down because of the signal
What is star topology?
A network structure where all devices are connected to a central hub or switch, creating a star like configuration
What are some benefits to star topology?
- better performance than bus networks as there are no collisions because each computer has a dedicated link to the central connectivity device.
- adding new computers onto the network is easy- you just plug them in, without it affecting the network performance
- if one cable fails, it does not affect the whole network as each deivce has its own link to the central connectivity device.
