Provides computers the ability to share resources.
Networking
The Network model that is usually 10 PC’s or less. Small and not common in business.
Peer to Peer (workgroup)
What 3 basic components required to connect to a network?
Connection (Network Interface Card)
Client (Client for Microsoft Networks/ Client for Novell Networks)
Protocol (TCP/IP)
NIC communication that can go both directions but only one at a time.
Half Duplex
NIC communication that can go both directions simultaneously.
Full Duplex
Computer Network in the same geographical area with a single administrative group.
Local Area Network LAN
A network grouping of multiple LANs to create a single organizational network with leased or shared data connections.
Wide Area Network (WAN)
The network type that uses wireless or fiber connections to provide networking within city limits.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
Network that’s used in the home or small business uses Bluetooth and wireless technologies.
Personal Area Network (PAN)
Network that uses WIFI
Wireless LAN (WLAN)
Layer 1 network device that connects multiples systems and is know as multi-port repeater.
Hub
A layer 2 or 3 device depending on capabilities. Layer two have replaced hubs and layer 3 have VLAN and routing capabilities. Powered over Ethernet
Switch
Connects multiple network segments, creating subnetworks. Functions at a layer 3, providing network routing based on protocol addresses.
Router
Provides functionality like a switch and router. Extend a wireless signal using radio frequencies. Identified via Service Set Identifier (SSID). Requires additional configuration.
Wireless Access Point (WAP)
Is a device that converts digital signals into audio signals for transmission over standard phone lines.
