Networking Flashcards
Client
defines the device an end-user uses to access a network
Server
A server, as the name suggests, serves up resources to a network
Hub
is an older technology that interconnects network components, such as clients and servers, and doesn’t inspect the data passing through its ports and simply broadcast the information received to all devices on its ports
At what layer does a hub function?
Layer 1
Switch
interconnects network components, and are available with a variety of port densities and learns which devices live off of which ports. It does this by inspecting traffic that comes into the port (inbound) and recording the source address.
At what layer does a switch function?
Layer 2
NIC
Network Interface card
MAC
Media Access Control
At what layer does a Router function?
Layer 3
Router
it examines the destination IP address of the traffic and, based on the it’s database of networks (that is, the routing table), it intelligently forwards the traffic out the appropriate interface.
