Network Types & Performance Flashcards
LAN (Local Area Network)
LAN has computer systems that are geographically close together and it is usually owned and managed by a network owner
WAN (Wide Area Network)
WAN has computer systems that are geographically distant to each other and they use third party communications, such as connections by internet services providers like BT
Network
This is where two or more devices are connected together to communicate.
Stand Alone
A device that is not connected to any other device
Interference
When signals are slowed down due to other factors like a brick wall slowing down a signal
Bandwidth
This refers to how much data can be sent and received over a network successfully in a given amount of time
How does a client-server network function
Clients make request to the server, the server manages requests and responds
How does a peer to peer network function
Data is shared directly between systems without requiring a central server
The use of a client-server network
The client is completely dependent on the server to provide and manage information. The server controls the network security, backups and can be upgraded to manage higher demand
The use of a peer to peer network
Each computer is equally responsible for providing data. Peer to peer is optimal for sharing files that can then be downloaded
