network types & performance Flashcards
local area network
based in one small site.
Usually owned and managed by the network owner.
Allows users to connect to the internal servers
wide area network
covers a large geographical area.
It often use third party communication channels, such as connections by internet services providers.
factors on performance of a network
-bandwidth- amount of data that can be sent across a network at once
-number of clients at a time
-number of data collisions
-interface
-distance to travel
-amount of data to transfer
wireless access point
Provides a link between wireless and wired networks.
router
used to transfer data packets between networks.
switch
used to connect devices together on a LAN
network interface controller/card
usually inside a computer so that it is able to connect to a network.
internet
a global network of interconnected networks
DNS server
a server that stores a list of domain names and a list of corresponding ID addresses
protocols
a set of rules that allow devices on a network to communicate with each other.
TCP/IP
TCP- allows packets to be sent and received between computers
IP- in charge of routing and addressing data packets.
HTTP/HTTPS
used to transfer web pages over the internet so that users can view them in a web browser.
FTP
file transfer protocol- used to transfer files across network
SMTP
simple mail transfer protocol- used to send emails to a mail server and between mail servers
POP, IMAP
