Network Topologies Flashcards
— designed to connect multiple computers and devices within a limited geographical distance.
— connected using multiple protocols, no physical wires
Local Area Network (LAN)
Advantages of LAN
— High data and service transmission compared to other networks
— Network Server acts as central unit for the whole network
Disadvantages of LAN
— needs constant administration
— easy to leak sensitive data
Network that covers the network of the entire city or connection of a small area.
— connected using wired network (data cables)
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
Advantages of MAN
— provides Full-Duplex data transmission
— network connection covers an entire city or some parts using optic cable
Disadvantages of MAN
— easy to be attacked by hackers and cyber criminals because the network is large
—Installation cost is high
— designed to connect devices over large distances like states or between countries
– connection is wireless, uses radio towers
— can be made of LAN and MAN networks
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Advantages of WAN
— covers a big geographical area
— uses radio towers
Disadvantages of WAN
— installation cost is high
— needs experienced technicians to maintain network
— difficult to prevent hacking
— difficult to debug as its a large network
— designed to enable devices in a home office environment to communicate and share data
Personal Area Network (PAN)
What is Peer–2-peer network
Each computer has equal responsibilities, data and capacities with other computers on the network
Advantage of Peer-2-peer network
– good for home networks & small business
– cheap
What is a Client/Server network
Clients must request service from server (host)
— configuration or physical arrangement where devices are connected together
Network Topology
— single central cable connecting multiple devices (network)
BUS network
