Network Tools Flashcards
Hub
A network device that broadcast info to every devices on the network
- multi-port repeater
- becomes less efficient as network traffic increases
- half-duplex ( transmit in one direction at one time)
- Vulnerable to eavesdropping
- speeds of 10 megabit and 100 megabits
Switch
Makes connections between specific devices on a network by sending and receiving data between them
- Controls flow of traffic and improves network performance
- Maintains MAC table
- bridges devices together
- Forwards traffic based on the data link address
- contains many ports and features
- may provide PoE (power over ethernet)
- OSI layer 2 (data link layer)
Router
Connects multiple networks together
- Connects networks and direct traffic based on the IP address of the destination Network
- Can include a firewall
- Data link layer (2)
Laptop - Router - Other Router - Tablet
Modem
Connects your router to the internet and brings internet access to the LAN
-Connectivity via telephone lines or Coaxial Cable
- Transmissions or digital signals from the internet and translate them into analog signals that can travel through physical connections provided by ISP(Internet Services Provider)
- Usually connect to a router that takes the decoded transmission and sends them on to the local network
Virtualization tools
Pieces of software that preforms network operations
- Hub, Switch, Router, or Modem
- Offered by cloud service
- Cost saving and Scalability
Firewall
Network security device that monitors traffic to or form your network
- Filters traffic based on the port number
- May be able to filter based on application traffic (OSI layer 7)
- OSI layer 4 (TCP/UDP layer)
- Can encrypt traffic into and out of the network, to protect it between sites
- Can proxy traffic
- May also have router functionality (OSI layer 3)
Servers
Provide info and services for devices like computers, smart home devise, and smart phones on the network
- Devices that connect to a server are called clients
Client-Server Model - Clients send request to the server for into and services. the server preforms the request for the clients
Wireless Access Points
provides wireless connectivity for a local network
provides a link between the wireless network and the wired network (a bridge)
makes forwarding decisions based on the destination mac address (identical process to a switch)
