Network Terms Flashcards
What is a datagram?
A basic transfer unit. Provide connection-less communication. Transport layer (OSI layer 4).
What is a channel?
Either the physical transmission medium (i.e a wire) or a logical connection over a multiplexed medium.
What is a session?
A time-delimited two-way link. Enables information exchange between devices.
What is a flow?
A sequence of packets.
What is a packet?
A formatted unit of data. Consists of control information and user data. In OSI = PDU on network layer (layer 3)
What is a frame?
A digital transmission unit. OSI layer 2 (data link)
What is media access control and hop-by-hop?
Media access control: the layer that controls the hardware responsible for interaction with the transmission medium (data link)
hop-by-hop: principle for controlling the flow of data in a network. Chunks of data are forwarded from node to node. Involves the source and destination node as well as intermediate nodes.
What is web server software?
Allows computers to act as web servers.
What is PPP?
Point-to-Point Protocol. A data link layer communication protocol between two routers directly without any hosts or other networking in between.
