What is a protocol?

A

A agreed upon set of rules for an interaction between two parties.

Example: An example is when two people when accidentally bump into each-other, so expect that one may start a conversation, which enables communication between each-other that could continue or end quickly with interaction.

This is a communication protocol.

Communication between 2 machines rather than people.

What is a IP Packet and its purpose?

A
  • made out of bytes
  • 2 main sections
  • IP | TCP | HTTP
    header stored in bytes -> packet source ip packet(address)
  • contains dest ip address
    if you have a single ip packet you know how information flows over the internet because all these ip packets have the source and destination. the header also has the total size of the packet is, the-header also has the version that such is operating by.
    -two version, version4(i pv4) || v6(i pv6) futuristic.
  • header is small 20-6- bytes, rest of the data IP packet where the information is stored for machines to store and retrieve. 2^16 bytes is 65,000 bytes. 0.065 mega bytes.
  • that data is not going to fit into one packet, needs multiple ip packets, if sent from one to multiple others only using protocol, possible packets could get lost, not guaranteeing the order by which the packets are ordered. where TCP comes into play.

TCP

A

TCP aims to solve when the IP cant be a stand alone accomplisher, so this is where we use tcp, to send IP packets in an ordered way guaranteeing reliability for destination machine or if packets are failing or corrupted when sent over the network.

TCP works at a level above IP,
