What is the purpose of SSH?
Encrypted remote access to a devices terminal/console.
What is Telnet and what ports does it use?
Telecommunication Network, TCP/23
What is the purpose of Telnet?
Unencrypted remote access to a devices terminal/console.
What is SMTP and what ports does it use?
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, TCP/25
What is the purpose of SMTP?
Server to server email transfer, support for user to send mail into a server. Does not support receiving mail.
What is DNS and what port does it use?
Domain Name System, UDP/53
What is the purpose of DNS?
Converts domain names into IP addresses for communication between client/servers.
What is DHCP and what port does it use?
Dynamic Host Config. Protocol, UDP/67/68
What is the purpose of DHCP?
Assigns IP addresses, subnet masks, default gateways.
What is subnetting?
Splitting a larger network into smaller chunks for the purpose of easier data management.
