Network Hardware Flashcards
What is a Network Interface Controller (NIC)?
A NIC provides a connection between the device and the network.
They are often built into the motherboard of computers.
What is a switch?
A switch connects several devices to a network.
Each computer is given a Media Access Control (MAC) address.
When data is sent it includes the sender and recipients address.
The switch learns the MAC addresses of the devices connected to it so that it sends data to the correct device.
What is a Wireless Access Point (WAP)?
A WAP connects a switch to other WiFi devices by broadcasting a SSID (network name) for devices to connect to.
WAPs use authentication and encryption to ensure individuals don’t take advantage of the network.
What is a router?
A router connects networks together.
