Network Fundamentals - Ethernet LANs Flashcards
A network that consists of only switches, wireless access points, and any user devices connected to them
Local Area Network (LAN)
A network that consists of 2 or more local networks and the connections between them
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Ethernet cable types
- UTP: Unshielded Twisted-Pair
- STP: Shielded Twisted-Pair
- Coax: Thinnet & Thicknet
- Fiber Optic
The two UTP cabling pinouts
- Crossover
- Straight-through
The UTP cable pinout used when connecting two similar devices together
Crossover cable pinout
The UTP cable pinout used when connecting two dis-similar devices together
Straight-through cable pinout
Physical network standard that uses four pairs of wires in the cable
1000Base-T (Gigabit Ethernet)
Physical network standards that use only two pairs of wires
10Base-T & 100Base-T
A feature present on Cisco switches that automatically changes the cable logic to make the connection work if the wrong cable pinout is used
Auto-MDIX
An identifier that is assigned to each device on a LAN; must be unique
Media Access Control (MAC) address
An Ethernet header field that identifies the type of packet encapsulated within the frame
The Ethernet Type field
An Ethernet trailer field used to perform error detection; is the only field in the Ethernet trailer
The Frame Check Sequence (FCS) field
The two types of sending logic used by devices in a LAN; the logic used depends on the device
- Full Duplex Logic
2. Half Duplex Logic
A device using this sending logic can send and receive at the same time
